There are tons of resources all over the internet, so instead of boring you with things you already know; I would like to have a conversation with you about hair loss. Right here and right now, just me to just you.
Hair loss is quite common, and statistics show that a significant portion of the population will experience loss or thinning of hair. I personally have experienced both; complete hair loss from chemotherapy in 2016 and although it came back (with lovely curls) it has thinned considerably from medication. I choose to see this as the best of three worlds – I can thicken it with extensions or toppers (or both), I can wrap it up and wear a wig, or I can style the daylights out of it and go “au natural.” But this is me and it took time to get to this mindset, so if you are struggling, know that your emotions are completely normal.
Earlier I said that hair loss is quite common, and there are various statistics that support this. Did you know that 1 in 4 women suffer from loss or thinning of hair? And to be inclusive, I want to also share that 3 out of 4 men experience loss or thinning of hair. When combined, this actually comprises a staggering 62.5% of our population. Interestingly enough, another source claims even higher rates, stating that about 1 in 3 women experience hair loss at some time in their lives and that as many as 2 in 3 women suffer hair thinning or bald spots. Regardless of which statistic or source you choose to follow, those numbers are astounding. Now I’m not a “misery loves company” kind of person so I’m not going down the “you are not alone” path in an attempt to make you feel better – that doesn’t do a thing about our hair and my goal here is to help you with feeling good about your hair and your hair solutions. What these numbers mean to me and where I’m taking you, is to say that you are normal, hair loss is normal, and you will be great!
So let’s talk about toppers! Toppers are a fantastic way to really transform your look. Whether your goal is to cover some light/early stage thinning at the crown/hairline/part or more progressed thinning with a topper that is essentially a ¾ wig, there is something to address nearly everything. But here is the thing with toppers….if you are someone who is shy about the fact that you might be wearing alternative hair and want to conceal that, it’s best to start looking at toppers during the early stages of hair loss when adding a small piece can be dismissed with the white lie of a new cut or new stylist, etc.
All this said, Jon Renau has been my “go to” for toppers (at the time of this writing – April 2021) and have wonderful technology and literature on their products. So for this reason, you will find JR’s Topper Base Chart and Topper Coverage Chart below, both are downloadable files that you may find useful in navigating the world of top pieces. There are so many wonderful manufacturers out there and I quite love them all because each have their “thing” that they do really well, so I’m not exclusive to any one brand. With all this in mind, remember that whether you choose me or another wonderful wig consultant (there are many!), an in person appointment will ALWAYS be best!
